A Hong Kong billionaire thinks China is on pace for spectacular, Industrial Revolution-style growth. Is he right? Ronnie Chan, the billionaire Hong Kong investor, says there is only one comparison for China&#39;s economy over the next decade: The enormous period of U.S. growth between 1890 and 1914, as industrialization and land grabs combined to rocket the country to prosperity.His audience at the Asian Pacific Business Outlook conference in Los Angeles, largely executives at U.S. companies looking to export goods to Asia, were salivating. But Chan also had a warning.&quot;The last ten years have been a very sad period of Chinese history,&quot; he said. &quot;China had a great opportunity to launch, if not complete, many of the necessary social reforms. For the past ten years, China basically did nothing in that regard, and they will pay dearly for it.&quot;
Everyone watching new Chinese President Xi Jingping and his team have wondered how far they will take promises of reform. Most important is support for China&#39;s domestic market and its poorer citizens, which many economists see as necessary to continued stable growth. Chan brought up the recent debate over the wisdom of investing in China between hedge fund short-seller Jim Chanos and Stephen Roach, the former Morgan Stanley Asia economist. While he conceded that social unrest, particularly growing income inequality, could disrupt the Chinese economy (Chanos&#39; concern), he thinks shorts will miss an enormous opportunity.&quot; What if social unrest does not happen? You never know when it&#39;s going to happen. If it doesn&#39;t happen in the next ten years, and you short the market, you&#39;re really really in trouble,&quot; Chan says. But he has one caveat for his $11 billion of shopping mall investments in China -- he didn&#39;t borrow any money for them. Nice financing, if you can get it.

<summary>It’s the last thing security professionals want to see: A new hacking method that makes it even harder to detect suspect code in emails. The method is actually a stealthy combination of two favorite attack modes, and it shows that hackers are pulling out all the stops to ensnare computer users in their webs.
Phishing and spear phishing have long been thought to be mutually exclusive hacking tricks, but cybercrooks have found a way to combine the two in a technique called longline phishing.
“The technique allows you to hit a lot of people very quickly and largely go undetected,” Dave Jevans, founder and CTO of Marble Security and founder of the Anti-Phishing Work Group, told TechNewsWorld.
With spear phishing, which is typically used as a vehicle for advanced persistent threat attacks like the recent one on The New York Times, a select group of connected people are targeted with a highly credible email message based on extensive research of the targets’ backgrounds.
“With longlining, you can get hundreds of people exposed to a website that will infect their computers,” Jevans noted.
He explained that longliners — named after commercial fishermen who use long lines of hooks to catch fish — might send 100,000 emails from 50,000 IP addresses, which makes it difficult to identify an email from a particular server as hacking bait.

Boiler room overhaul cuts fuel and energy usage for Graystone Corp.
When George T. Wilkinson Inc. replaced Graystone Corporation’s existing atmospheric boilers with
AERCO condensing boilers, not only were boiler room operating costs significantly reduced, but Graystone received a substantial rebate from NStar to assist with project costs.
From 2008 to 2009 Graystone saved 30 percent in fuel costs –– including therm reduction as well as heating degree days. Graystone Buildings Manager Bob Snow explained this was Graystone’s first time working with Wilkinson. Snow invited Geoff Wilkinson and Geoff Wilkinson, Jr. onsite and was very impressed with what they had to say. The Wilkinson Energy Efficiency Engineers® identified the best equipment for Graystone’s unique needs, which resulted in substantially reducing fuel costs and energy usage.
Located in Cambridge, Mass., Graystone installed its original boilers during the 1970s. One of the downsides of operating atmospheric gas boilers is the inability to properly control fuel and air.
Because of their significant intake of O2, these boilers require excessive use of fuel to counteract the intake –– without enough fuel the boiler is at risk to “blow out.” The nine inefficient, gas-fired
Hydrotherm atmospheric boilers were replaced with two natural gas-fired AERCO Modulex 1060 condensing boilers. Constructed with cast aluminum heat exchangers, the units are able to condense without any thermal shock. The MLX-1060 combines the power of seven thermal modules, each operating with greater than 3:1 turndown to deliver a 23:1 range of operations.
From the low-fire input of a single module (45,500 BTU per hour) to the unit’s full fire capacity (1,060,000 BTU per hour), the boiler matches the load precisely, without a cycling or temperature surplus by always employing as many modules as possible –– each firing at the lowest possible firing rate. Less energy is required for the group of thermal modules, each firing at part-load to heat a building. This results in greater fuel savings compared to a module requiring each thermal module to reach full 151,500 BTU per hour capacity before the next module goes online.
The independent operation of two or more thermal modules increases each boiler’s turndown range while also increasing its overall reliability. Because thermal efficiency increases as firing rates drop,
the simultaneous low-fire operation of multiple modules ensures Modulex boilers continuously maximize operating efficiency. “They were very, very good. Very thorough and professional. All of the service technicians were very knowledgeable,” said Snow. “The heat in the building has never been better,” he said.

Hass Associates Cyber Warning Tips and Reviews
LONDON — International law enforcement agencies say the recent $45-million dollar ATM heist is just one of many scams they’re fighting in an unprecedented wave of sophisticated cyberattacks.
Old-school robberies by masked criminals are being eclipsed by stealth multimillion dollar cybercrime operations which are catching companies and investigators by surprise.
“We are seeing an unprecedented number of cyberscams that include phishing for financial data, viruses, credit card fraud and others,” Marcin Skowronek, an investigator at Europol’s European Cybercrime Center in The Hague said on Saturday.
“In Europe, we are generally quite well protected against some types of fraud because of the chip and pin technology we use, but there are still shops and machines around the world who still take cards without chips. And the most popular destinations for this type of fraud are the United States and the Dominican Republic.”
U.S. Investigators said Thursday a gang hit cash machines in 27 countries in two attacks — the first netting $5 million in December and then $40 million in February in a 10-hour spree that involved about 36,000 transactions.
Hackers got into bank databases, eliminated withdrawal limits on prepaid debit cards and created access codes. Others loaded that data onto any plastic card — even a hotel keycard — with a magnetic stripe
A similar scam yielded some 50 arrests this year in Europe during a joint police operation between Romanian police and Europol, Skowronek said.
The operation took more than a year, involved some 400 police officers across Europe and required work comparing bank losses to illegal transactions and then cross-referencing suspects, said Skowronek, who said many national police forces were beefing up their undercover work in the cyberworld to catch criminals.
Investigators found illegal workshops for producing devices and software to manipulate point-of-sale terminals. Illegal electronic equipment, financial data, cloned cards and cash were seized in raids in Britain and Romania.
The group stole credit and debit card numbers and PIN codes by implanting card reading devices and malicious software on point-of-sale terminals. The criminals then used counterfeit payment cards with stolen data for further illegal transactions in countries that included Argentina, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Japan, Mexico, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Thailand and the United States.
Some 36,000 debit card and credit card holders in some 16 countries were affected, Skowronek said. The amount stolen was unclear.
Bank fraud, ATM scams and phishing are common in Romania, one of the most corrupt countries in the European Union, according to Transparency International which monitors and measures graft.
Under the late communist dictator Nicolae Ceausescu, who was ousted and executed in 1989, Romanians specialized in mathematics and computer coding and criminal gangs have tapped into those skills. The tradition has continued and Romanian school students are more advanced in mathematics than many of their European counterparts.
Nadine Spanu, a spokesperson for Romania’s anti-crime prosecutors, said Saturday she had no statement to offer on the $45-million heist or a possible Romania connection.
Skimming works when criminals place devices on ATMs that copy consumers’ card details and leave them vulnerable to fraud. There have been similar cases in the United States and Britain.
The EU is the world’s largest market for payment card transactions and it is estimated that organized crime groups derive more than 1.5 billion euros ($1.9 billion) a year from payment card fraud in the EU.
Mike Urban, director of financial crime solutions at Fiserv, a Brookfield-Wisconsin-based company that provides financial technology to banks, credit unions and corporations across the world, says banks have not caught up with the threat of electronic crime.
“Compare this to a physical bank security. If someone walks in today, they’re probably not going to get very much money, the dye pack is going to explode, they will be caught on video, they’re probably not going to get away with it, and they’re probably going to spend a long time in jail,” said Urban. “Online, in the cyberworld, we’re not there yet.”
One security loophole thieves have learned to exploit is the lack of real-time transactions in ATM-speak.
Known as the “Gone in 60 Seconds” scam, thieves deposit money and then make co-ordinated cash-advance withdrawals in various places — but all in less than 60 seconds so the machines essentially regard all of the withdrawals as one transaction.
In October, some 14 people were charged following an FBI-led investigation into the theft of more than $1 million from Citibank using the 60-second scam. The simultaneous transactions at casinos in California and Nevada tricked the system into thinking that they were one transaction. Even on some joint accounts where both partners have cards for the same account, users can often bypass withdrawal limits if the transactions are done at the same time.
“This type of attack might be preventable if ATM networks were able to monitor transactions in real time for unusually large numbers of transactions involving individual cards or cards from the same issuing institution. Unfortunately, that type of infrastructure doesn’t exist today, but perhaps it’s time to consider creating and implementing it now, especially after this latest attack,” said Tom Cross, director of security research at the Lancope, a company specializing in flow analysis for security and network performance based in Alpharetta, Georgia.
Police Maj. Gen. Pisit Paoin, chief of Thailand’s Technology Crime Suppression Division, said in a telephone interview Saturday that Thai police have arrested more than 20 suspects involved in the $45 million cyber heist including those from Bulgaria, Bangladesh and eastern Europe.
He said that in the latest arrest in early April, a group of Bangladeshi and Malaysian suspects were using about 50 cards to withdraw cash from machines in Bangkok for a month and took out about 10 million baht ($336,000).

BP is to be the lead sponsor of a once-in-a-lifetime exhibition which will bring masterpieces from the Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg to Britain for a unique show at one of this country’s finest historic houses, Houghton in Norfolk, opening on 17 May 2013.
The magnificent art collection, which originally hung at Houghton, was brought together by Britain’s first Prime Minister, Robert Walpole (1676-1745), and following his death was sold in 1779 to Catherine the Great of Russia and was later housed at the State Hermitage Museum.
Peter Charow, BP’s Vice President for Russia said: “We are pleased to bring the exhibition to its original home. BP is a major supporter of culture in both the UK and Russia.”
Over 70 paintings from the collection, including masterpieces by Van Dyck, Poussin, Rubens, Rembrandt, Velazquez and Murillo are being reassembled for the first time in over 200 years and shown in their original settings at Houghton. The exhibition includes works on loan from the Hermitage and other Russian museums as well as loans from the National Gallery, Washington and the Metropolitan Museum, New York.
The exhibition will reproduce the original hang of the Grand Rooms at Houghton, bringing them back to their original splendor. In its scale and ambition, the exhibition will be a fitting celebration both of 250th anniversary of Catherine the Great’s accession to the throne, and the long and distinguished history of Anglo-Russian cultural relations.
For over a decade BP’s support for Russian culture includes the Mariinsky Theatre and the Valery Gergiev Foundation. In 2011-2012 BP extended its support and has partnered with the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory, the State Hermitage, Tretyakov Gallery, Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko musical theatre and annual Dyagilev musical festival in St Petersburg further demonstrating BP’s commitment to Russian cultural life.
In the UK, BP is a major supporter of the arts with a programme that spans over 35 years. In 2011 BP announced it is investing almost £10 million in extending its long term partnerships with the British Museum, the National Portrait Gallery, the Royal Opera House, and Tate Britain over the next five years. Taken together, these agreements represent one of the most significant long-term corporate investments in UK arts and culture.

As the economic climate cools, designer labels are retreating to their core values. The result is beautiful, wearable clothes – the backlash against fast fashion On Wednesday the final curtain came down on the biannual global merry-go-round of New York, London, Milan and Paris fashion weeks. The clothes in the 300 or so catwalk collections shown over this four-week period will be in shops from August 2013 until January 2014.
These are the bland facts that underpin the premise of fashion weeks. Show it, make it, sell it, make more. Before the economic depression settled over Europe, its fashion weeks were also about excitement, drama, young designers pushing crazy new ideas and challenging women to express themselves in inventive ways.
But the autumn/winter 2013 collections were not pulling punches, as most brands focused their attention on doing very nice clothes they know their customers will buy, in the best possible way they know how. At Chanel it was all about techno tweeds; at Céline fantastic fluffy coats and knits; Valentino focused on exquisite dresses inspired by Vermeer&#39;s Girl with a Pearl Earring; Vuitton&#39;s handbags were as luxurious as possible.
For some editors this is not the way forward. &quot;Fashion needs radical concepts, people who are doing new and exciting things,&quot; says Sarah Mower, contributing editor of American Vogue and the British Fashion Council&#39;s ambassador for emerging talent.
For others, the commercial approach is a quiet revolution. &quot;This season has been about designers and brands returning to their core values,&quot; says Grazia&#39;s fashion director Susannah Frankel. &quot;I don&#39;t think this is boring. If anything, it gives the customer something she can rely on. It is a backlash against the fastness of recent years. What I saw on the catwalks was individual designers at their most authentic, and that to me is exciting.&quot;
&quot;In difficult times commercial is good,&quot; says Emma Elwick Bates, British Vogue&#39;s style editor. &quot;From a Vogue point of view the autumn/winter season has seen the return of real womanly dressing in a Hitchcockian way; all clavicles and cleavage – lots of breast action. But in essence what we have seen is designers focusing on the greatest hits and in turn building a desire for a shopping list of classic winter basics. It sounds obvious but next winter will be about a really great coat, and boots.&quot;
Indeed the designer&#39;s designer, Miuccia Prada, easily the most revered working today (if you don&#39;t count Phoebe Philo of Céline) described her collection as &quot;a lot of things I really like&quot;. Hardly revolutionary, but it&#39;s not a bad starting point to consider what fashion can be for: namely clothes to be worn and loved.
Paula Reed, the former fashion editor and recently appointed fashion director of Harvey Nichols, has seen the fashion weeks from an entirely new perspective this season. &quot;On a magazine you can talk about ideas – but as a buyer you have to commit to the idea and sell it to a customer. It&#39;s a challenge,&quot; she says. &quot;London and Paris were the cities with the best ideas, they crackled with energy and excitement. What young London designers can do on a shoestring is awe-inspiring, and if you are looking for innovation, Christopher Kane radiates it.&quot;
But Reed summarises that for the new season &quot;You&#39;ll want 10 coats. But will have to settle for one, and if you haven&#39;t got a polo-neck you&#39;re stuffed. Polo-necks underpin everything,&quot; she says.
Street style, though, is playing an increasingly important role in the fashion weeks; the proliferation in street-style blogs, and those fashion eccentrics who dress to the nines in order to be photographed have spawned their own trends and their own labels. &quot; When you get to the showrooms, you see that each collection is offering a bomber jacket, a duffel coat and sweatshirts. It&#39;s all about reaching those younger customers,&quot; adds Reed.
Capturing the youth market is why young New York-based Alexander Wang was hired to take over at Balenciaga; and also why Hedi Slimane was hired for Saint Laurent.
Slimane, with his California Grunge collection managed to be the most controversial designer this season, simply by doing luxury versions of clothes that look like what disaffected teenagers across the world are already wearing.
Alexander Fury, editor of Love magazine, suggests Slimane is: &quot;gleefully carrying on the punk tradition of Yves Saint Laurent himself who when he was fired from Dior in the 60s, it was for showing a leather jacket on the catwalk&quot;.
So in a season of refined luxury great coats and polo-necks, Hedi Slimane is the only rebel. There is something rather fitting about that.

It&#39;s a challenge,&quot; she says. &quot;London and Paris were the cities with the best ideas, they crackled with energy and excitement. What young London designers can do on a shoestring is awe-inspiring, and if you are looking for innovation, Christopher Kane radiates it.&quot;

<summary>Canadian Engineered Products &amp; Sales Ltd. (CANNEPP) is a manufacturer’s representative specializing in Cleaver Brooks and other boilers and boiler room technology.
EMISSION &amp; ENERGY SOLUTIONS
Solving our need for heat in all of its various forms is a serious challenge for a planet with limited resources. As the demand for these resources grows, the need for energy conservation is essential. The clean, efficient utilization of fossil fuels in boiler applications is a leading priority in our selection of products and services. CANNEPP represents industry-leading manufacturers who are on the cutting edge of combustion and controls technology.
Combustion &amp; Controls Technology
The science and art of combustion are uniquely combined through a wide range of product offerings. The latest developments in technology including low-NOx emissions, high turndown, linkage-less combustion control, oxygen trim, variable frequency drive (combustion air fans), and draft control are applied on burner systems of all types and size ranges to maximize efficiency and reduce harmful emissions.
Plant optimization
Controls integration through the use of PLC and touch screen technology can be applied to improve operation, to reduce down time, to provide real-time information, to alert operators to upsets or failures and to record critical operating data. Balancing the need for energy where and when it is needed with just the right amount of heat is the key to optimizing boiler plant operation. CANNEPP tailors all of these solutions for plant optimization to the simplest and most sophisticated plants and facilities.
Space &amp; Water Heating Technology
Methods of providing heat for space comfort and for domestic use are produced in a variety of ways at close to 100% efficiency to maximize system designs. Condensing boilers can be applied as stand alone or in a variety of ways to complement other heat sources such as conventional (non-condensing) boilers, geothermal, and solar.
Waste Heat Recovery
Heat is produced in vast amounts as exhaust and in the effluent of fossil-fuel fired plants. This &quot;lost&quot; energy can be used to pre-heat or re-heat media of all kinds including fuel, air, water, process liquids, and gases. Condensing feed water heaters, economizers and a variety of heat exchangers are ideal for applications where boilers are installed.
Alternative fuels
Fired boilers can operate on a wide variety of fuels. Although natural gas and commercial grades of fuel oil are the most common, boilers can also be fired on fuels such as liquid propane, digester gas, landfill gas, hydrogen, wood waste, waste oil, waste chemicals, and electricity to name but a few. CANNEPP offers a wide variety of products for applications where back up fuels are required or when combustible waste or by-products are readily available. These fuels can be burned cleanly and efficiently and they play an important role in energy use and sustainability.

<summary>Rebates and efficiencies help residents save energy and cash
It&#39;s Earth Day, an annual event that encourages us to remember the environment and our place in it. Good news: By cutting back on your energy and water use, you don&#39;t just help conserve resources, you put money back in your pocket — where it belongs. Save Energy Mary Morris was wary when she had to pay for an energy audit of her single-family home in the North Park Hill to qualify for an Xcel rebate. Twelve months later, she&#39;s a convert. Since contractor Casey Staley from REenergizeCO completed an energy audit on her home, which was built in 1948, and performed subsequent improvements last spring, Morris has saved $438 on her energy bill. That&#39;s in addition to Staley finding $1,100 in rebates for a $3,800 project. &quot; For $2,700, we got the audit, our duct work in the attic sealed with flexible mastic, and I could sense an improvement in the air quality within 24 hours,&quot; she says. With that money Morris also insulated the attic as well as a 1,700-square-foot main floor that included a large sun room, and weatherized a nearly 1,500-square-foot &quot;bomb bunker&quot; basement, where Staley added a threshold to her energy-sucking boiler room. The money also went toward purchasing an energy-efficient dishwasher. Staley, who&#39;s a vetted contractor through Xcel and Denver Energy Challenge, works to make sure his clients receive all rebates possible. He says residents are often unaware of how much money they can save on up-front costs. He added that residents who performed home improvements saw additional savings in their tax returns this year through a federal credit. &quot; That tax credit is 10 percent,&quot; he said. &quot; If the work is $4,000, you&#39;re getting $400 back from the (feds).&quot; Morris, who received around $300 back from the tax credit this year, looks forward to a summer where her air conditioner will keep her home at a comfortable 71 degrees. &quot; My husband says the sign of a civilized life is when you&#39;re warm in the winter and cool in the summer,&quot; she says. &quot; And I agree.&quot; Energy-efficiency resources
• Find a rebate through Xcel Xcel offers qualified Colorado residents rebates on home improvements ranging from heating and cooling to insulation and weatherization. xcelenergy.com • Denver Energy Challenge If you&#39;re a Denver resident having trouble navigating rebates, Denver Energy Challenge offers free advising services. They&#39;ll connect you to approved contractors, and review bids. They also help with applications for low-interest energy loans. denverenergy.org • Boulder EnergySmart This service provides Boulder residents with free phone advising on home improvements. If you&#39;ve had a home energy audit, their services are free. If not, for $90 they will do the audit and pair you with an energy adviser. energysmartyes.com Short-term solutions
• Replace traditional incandescent lights with energy-efficient ones According to the Department of Energy, replacing 15 traditional incandescent light bulbs with energy-saving bulbs like compact fluorescent lamps, or CFLs, saves $50 a year. CFLs last 10 times longer and can pay for themselves in savings in less than nine months. • Set your refrigerator and freezer to optimal temperatures Xcel recommends setting your refrigerator between 34 and 37 degrees and your freezer at 5 degrees for optimal energy performance. • Monitor your thermostat The DOE recommends setting your thermostat
at 68 degrees in the winter and 78 in the summer. Better yet, install a programmable thermostat and save $180 a year.

<summary>The Internet gives us magical access to everything at the press of a button, but it also gives strangers access to us.
International Hass and Associates Phishing News Prevention

MONTREAL - Travellers should be wary of cyber threats on vacation as they access free wireless networks with their smartphones, tablets or laptops, says software security company Symantec Corp.
Canadians travelling for March break and into the summer season shouldn&#39;t be doing things like pulling up their bank accounts on Wi-Fi networks, said Symantec Canada&#39;s Lynn Hargrove.
&quot; What people don&#39;t realize is that there&#39;s no security on those Wi-Fi networks for the most part,&quot; she said.
&quot;It&#39;s a great way to keep in touch while you&#39;re on vacation, but there are some inherent risks that come with it that people just aren&#39;t thinking about.&quot;
Symantec has found that two in 10 Canadians pull up their bank accounts on free Wi-Fi networks in Canada.
Young men are most at risk for cybercrime because they are &quot;fearless&quot; and access risky Internet sites, said Hargrove, director of consumer solutions, from Toronto.
According to Symantec&#39;s 2012 Norton Cybercrime report, travellers are often victimized through their mobile devices while abroad, often by text messages.
&quot;We&#39;re seeing a lot of fraudulent texts asking you to click on a link or go and dial a number to retrieve a voice mail,&quot; Hargrove said.
And the wealth of information stored on a smartphone - pictures, texts, emails, contact lists, work documents, banking information - can be valuable to cyber criminals if stolen or lost, Hargrove said.
&quot;What people aren&#39;t realizing is that in many cases they have more information on that device than they have on their home PC.&quot;
Smartphone users should at a minimum have a password to access their device, Hargrove said, and there&#39;s also security software available for smartphones.
The 2012 Norton Cybercrime report found that 92 per cent of survey respondents in Russia said they had been victims of cybercrime.
For Canadians travelling to Mexico or Brazil, each country has a rate of 75 per cent of its online citizens being past victims of cybercrime, Hargrove said.
In less developed countries with a lot of free Wi-Fi networks there also tends to be a lot of cybercrime, she added. The rate of cybercrime in France is 55 per cent and it&#39;s 70 per cent in Canada, according to the report, which surveyed 13,018 online adults last July in 24 countries including Canada, Australia, Brazil, China, Mexico, Poland Singapore, Turkey, United Kingdom and United States.

<summary>abney and associates internet security reviews, 3 must-do steps to recover from a phishing scam
It&#39;s a sinking feeling, when you realized you&#39;ve been had by a phishing scam. In the frenetic digital world we live in, it can happen to anyone.
So you&#39;ve clicked on a link that now seems very suspicious. You&#39;re concerned that the bad guys may be in control of your computing device. Or perhaps you&#39;ve typed some account information into a web form, and you&#39;re having second thoughts about the authenticity of the form.
Recovering will require work. Here are three things you can do if you believe you&#39;ve fallen prey to a phishing scam delivered by e-mail, a social media posting or even a phone call, according to Adam Levin, Chairman of IDentity Theft 911. Update and scan: If you have clicked on or downloaded anything that might infect your system, then make sure you install or update anti-virus software and run a full scan of your system. Here is helpful guidance from ID Theft 911.
Contact credit agencies. If you have disclosed any personal information or you&#39;re worried your account may have been accessed, you can place an alert with any one of the three major credit bureaus signals to potential creditors that you could be a victim of identity theft.
Update account logons. If you have reason to believe that any of your email or social media accounts are compromised make sure you change.</summary>
