It is an essential part of new product development, since it facilitates the most difficult stage in creating a new product -- the front end of innovation at which customer needs are identified and synthesized in the design brief. Unlike a market research approach, design research understands people and practices in the context of their whole life, not a narrowly defined customer experience.
