Metamaterials are materials that are able to bend light in ways that natural materials cannot; they can do so because they are made of layered materials with very tiny spaces in each layer such that when combined result in a mesh that is able to bend light in desired ways; sort of like taking several screen doors and laying them atop one another slightly out of line.
