In a well-served market that is rotated towards price and convenience, I have argued that integration will be key. The ease with which new gear can be put in is a more meaningful success indicator than the difficulty of removing it. With insertion in mind, integration with things like OpenStack, Puppet, Chef, CFEngine, and the like are of primary importance.

Since I’ve hopped the fence to the “vendor side,” affectionately known as the “dark side” to some of my peers, I’ve noticed a few things. One is the pervasive delusion that meaningful integration that lowers OpEx and improves the operational experience is someone else’s job or that it’s really not important at all. In fact, it is everyone’s job and the combination of two emerging trends will provide a path for coherently managed infrastructure.

Every SDN story seems to start with some reference to the Gartner hype cycle and a somewhat condescending reference to buzz words. It doesn’t have to be that way, but when you are positioning yet again something that has been positioned a million times before, you start there I guess. The context from which we speak doesn’t have to start with the marketing and noise; we can do better. Besides, SDN is not an end goal so much as a means to a goal. We ought to focus on what we do with it.
